His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Al-Najafy (may Allah prolong his life) welcomed delegations from within Iraq and several Gulf countries who had come to Najaf to visit the shrine of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).
In a heartfelt and advisory meeting, His Eminence (may Allah prolong his life) presented a series of religious and social guidelines, urging visitors to adhere to the conduct of sincere believers and emphasizing the necessity of daily self-accountability. He warned that those who do not reflect on their actions day and night are "in grave danger," stressing that self-accountability is not limited to men or women, nor is it tied to age or status—rather, it is a trait of the true believer.
"One who does not hold himself accountable cannot be considered among the faithful. A true believer is in a constant state of self-reflection, whether they are a man or woman, young or old—there is no distinction. A person should review their actions every night, contemplating what they did from the Fajr prayer until bedtime: What did they see? What did they hear? What did they say? What did they take or give? Were their steps in obedience or sin?" His Eminence (may Allah prolong his life) stated.
He affirmed that the ideal time for self-accountability is at night, when the household is quiet and one is alone with their thoughts. They should sit and recall their actions during the day—if they find they were in obedience, they should thank Allah and pray for acceptance; if they find they erred, they should repent, seek forgiveness, and ask for pardon.
His Eminence (may Allah prolong his life) emphasized the importance of recalling the advice of Imam Musa ibn Ja’far (peace be upon them both), who urged his children to consistently engage in self-accountability, describing it as "a comprehensive testament containing the essence of religion, sufficient to be a treasure for the Hereafter." He said, "Keep this advice before your eyes, and instill it in your sons, daughters, and grandchildren, for it is a vital principle in this world."
Addressing the visitors, he said: "If anyone leaves Najaf without taking this advice with them, they have lost something great. This is not just an ordinary visit but a divine blessing and a great favor that should result in awareness and righteous conduct."
His Eminence also spoke about the virtue and status of Najaf, saying: "A believer’s sleep in Najaf is an act of worship because Ali (peace be upon him) is present here. Just as his birth was inside the Kaaba, a believer’s sleep in Mecca is likewise an act of worship, as mentioned in some narrations." He explained that a believer’s presence near the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) carries profound spiritual and moral significance.
Grand Ayatollah Al-Najafy (may Allah prolong his life) also encouraged visitors to explore historical Islamic sites such as the Great Mosque of Kufa, which he described as "the greatest mosque of knowledge in the world," emphasizing that "within it, the Commander of the Faithful prayed and was martyred (peace be upon him). This mosque bears witness to a grand history that must not be forgotten."
