Question:In recent years, genetic fingerprinting or DNA testing has become widespread for determining distant lineage through specific scientific methods. Some experts in this field claim that these tests are entirely accurate. 1.To what extent can these test results be relied upon religiously to confirm or deny a person’s lineage to a particular tribe? 2.If these tests hold no religious validity, what is the ruling on undergoing them? 3.If they do hold religious validity, is it obligatory for the person who undergoes the test to correct their lineage, acknowledge the error, and publicly declare it?
Answer:In the name of Allah, it is not permissible to rely on these tests. However, if the science itself provides conclusive evidence, then the proof lies in the science, not the test itself. Allah knows best.
Question:Are sons of Al-Abbas (PBUH) regarded as Sayed? I would like to have an answer for this because it affects my sister’s marriage.
Answer:In the name of Allah, be advised, my son, that being a Sayed means two things: First: the one who belongs to Hashim (PBUH) by lineage. This one is forbidden to have the alms which are given by the non-Sayed to the Sayed, and other relevant rules concerning the women. This meaning includes all the sons of the Commander of the Faithful along with the sons of his brothers. Second: the one who belongs to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HF) through the lineage of Lady Zahraa and Imam Ali (PBUT). This meaning is more honored than the first. Allah knows best.
