Question:Is it permissible to wear black and white during Muharram?
Answer:In the name of Allah, whoever refrains from wearing black while still mourning for the Master of Martyrs (PBUH) does not commit a sin, but they miss out on the reward and the participation in mourning with the infallible Ahlulbait (PBUT). Allah is the Guide and the Knower.
Question:His Eminence (may Allah prolong his life) has issued a fatwa stating that it is recommended to wear black in the months of Muharram and Safar, as they are months of grief over the misfortunes of Ahlulbait (PBUT). Is this ruling applicable to the first eight days of the month of Rabiul Awwal as it was narrated about the Commander of the Faithful (PBUH) that one of the names of the ninth day of Rabiul Awwal is the day of removing blackness? So, can we benefit from this narration that it is desirable to wear black from the beginning of Muharram until the eighth day of Rabiul Awwal and on the ninth day it is removed?
Answer:in the name of Allah, the narration is clear and it is as you understood, my son. We have been ordered to show grief on Ahlulbait (PBUT) as much as we can and wearing black is one of its manifestation. Allah knows best.
Question:What is the ruling of wearing black after the two months of Muharram and Safar, intending to show sadness on Imam Hussein (PBUH)?
Answer:In the name of Allah, showing sadness on Al-Hussein (PBUH) and the rest of Ahlulbait is desirable and required by sharia. Wearing black clothes in the usual ways of it, rather the most prominent of which is the embodiment of that. The one who does so for what we have mentioned deserves the reward from Allah Almighty. The privilege of grieving for the Imam Hussein (PBUH) should be highlighted for the grief of the rest of the infallible Imams, and this is achieved in the wearing of black on the months of Muharram and Safer as well as on the day of the deaths of the infallible Imams. Allah knows best.
Question:Based on the fact that it is disliked to dress in black for Ahlulbait (PBUH), is this disliking removed when they want to dress in black to show sadness for their calamities? Is this specified at any time or place, especially women usually wearing black clothes like gowns?
Answer:In the name of Allah, it is not proved for me that it is disliked to dress in black. Yes, it is proved to me through the narrations that wearing black shoes is disliked. If we think of disliking of wearing black clothes, we will see that it is because the Abbasid politicians used black clothes as their logo that are enemies of Ahlulbait (PBUH). Allah knows best.
Question:It has been narrated that praying is disliked while dressing in black. Is the disliking removed when show it for Imam Hussein (PBUH) or removed on the martyrdom of all the infallibles (PBUH)?
Answer:In the name of Allah, it is not disliked to pray wearing black clothes to show sadness on any infallible, starting from the messenger (PBUH&HF) and ending to Imam Hassan Al-Askari (PBUH). Allah knows best.
Question:Do we have to be cautious from something in case of dressing in black or increasing it?
Answer:In the name of Allah, there is nothing to be cautious from religiously and traditionally so long as man is a way from the enemies of Ahlulbait (PBUH). Allah is the all Guide and best Knowing.
Question:Where was this belief of dressing in black taken from?
Answer:In the name of Allah, these traditions and other similar ones happen in the communities gradually. Regarding dressing in black, it seems that it is universally agreed that people dress in black when they want to show sadness. Perhaps, this tradition emerged after the fall of Banu Omayyad and Banu Al-Abbas regime; a time where the pressure on the Shiites of Ahlulbait (PBUH) decreased in general. Allah knows best.
Question:What is the ruling of dressing in black in Muharram and Safar months?
Answer:In the name of Allah, we have mentioned in our previous answers that every act commemorating the tragedy of Al-Taf and making people remember and cry over Imam Hussein (PBUH) is required and necessary unless there is a refrainment from the public or a religious prohibition. It is recommended and liked, where man is rewarded for it if he intends to commemorate the tragedy of Hussein (PBUH) and share Ahlulbait (PBUH) their grief. Allah is the all Guide.
